A beautiful shot of a Mobula Ray gathering by @filippoborghi5 . What makes these gatherings even more spectacular is that the rays are commonly seen jumping as far as 6 meters above the water and remaining airborne for several seconds. Scientists are not completely sure what the reason for this is, but many popular hypotheses for these flights include feeding, courtship displays, communication, or ridding themselves of parasites. Have you ever heard of @puravidabracelets? They have been one of my favorite companies the past few years because they are a company with a purpose! 🐚 Every bracelet is handmade in Costa Rica (hence their name, Pura Vida ✌️🏽) and provides full time jobs to hundreds of local artisans. They have also donated almost 1 million dollars to charities over the past five years. Let's cheer on Pura Vida Bracelets for all of their hard work and dedication to better our world! 🐙 Website! ➡️ beforthesea.com #conservation #puravida 📸 @puravidabracelets @the_brookedavis
Happy World Sea Turtle Day!! 🐢Want to know a fun fact that highlights the importance of rescue organizations in conservation?! 🐙 A study by sea turtle expert, Dr. Cowder (1994) modeled the importance of different age classes of sea turtles in the recovery of sea turtle populations. It found that saving just a handful of juvenile/ adult sea turtles had a disproportionally larger impact on the recovery of populations than protection of their eggs. Sorry eggs!🥚💕 Since then, management effort has been heavily focused on implementing better 🎣 fishing techniques (such as turtle exclusion devices in fishing nets) and rehabilitation of juvenile/ adult sea turtles 🐢, and the population recovery has reflected those efforts!! 📈 But what about those eggs?! 🙊 Sea turtles are "r-selected". This means that they produce hundreds and thousands of more offspring than necessary, because they have no parental care for their young. This assures that at least one (maybe) offspring will survive to adulthood. Therefore, the eggs taken by "egg-snatchers" are turtles that would have died anyways, so the impact on the overall population is actually negligible. Btw, egg-snatching is still not cool bruh. 🚫 This is "Browser" by the way. He is adorable and well on his way to recovery thanks to the Marathon Turtle Hospital! 📸 @marathonturtlehospital Coming soon! ➡️ beforthesea.com Be for sea turtles, be for their recovery, be for the sea! #beforthesea #degreeforthesea #seaturtle #worldseaturtleday #conservation #rehabilitation #rescue #marathonturtlehospital #oceans #protectouroceans #saveouroceans
